Jazz at the Flinders Golf Bowls Club

The best kept secret in Flinders is out. We have a new music venue!

The Flinders Golf Bowls club hosted three nights of jazz with John and Bonnie Thorn in January. The sold out shows were a huge success, and many members of the audience were astonished to discover the hidden gem that is the bowls club, hidden away in its quiet little corner.

Ticket prices included a complimentary glass of local Pier 10 wine on arrival, as well as nibbles on the tables. This was made possible due to the generous sponsorship of Nelson McDermott Building Surveyors. The setting could not have been more beautiful, and Flinders served up lovely hot weather for all three nights.

John Thorn is an internationally renowned composer and musical director and has worked with Meow Meow and Bob Downe. He has composed five musicals, has won two Green Room awards and was accompanist and producer of Spontaneous Broadway and Random Musical. He has also recently written a work titled ‘Looking for Lawson’, which sets Henry Lawson’s poetry to John’s original music. It’s fabulous.

Bonnie Thorn is John’s daughter, and at the age of only sixteen has a beautiful pure voice which amazed everyone.

John and Bonnie performed a repertoire ranging from Gershwin and Mancini to a number of John’s own compositions.   For the second and third performances, they were joined by Bruce Sandell on saxophone and flute, which added another dimension to the show.

One of the fun highlights of the series was at the final performance on January 27th. John, Bonnie and Bruce welcomed local TV legend and Gold Logie winner Tony Barber to the microphone. Tony sang ‘Moon River’ and ‘The Lady Is A Tramp’ to rapturous applause.

Now that the bowls club has a stage set up (built by members) and has proven itself as a venue, watch this space for future musical offerings. John himself was heard to mutter – ‘next year would be good’….

In the meantime get ready for the Inaugural RT Edgar Social Bowls Championship. This will be great fun – teams are being entered from businesses and groups around the village for a fun competition to be run over three evenings in February. Absolute beginner bowlers are encouraged and mentoring will be provided by the bowls club members. Get your competitive juices flowing – email bowlsatflindersgolfclub@gmail.com to register your team.   The barbecue will be on and the bar will be open!
