The Lions Club of Flinders District is holding a Forum on Friday 7th February at the Flinders Civic Hall from 5.00-6.30pm, to raise awareness of the homelessness crisis within our midst. There is a lack of affordable rental properties on the Peninsula, and this has lead to increased homelessness and increased demands for the services provided by Southern Peninsula Community Support (SPCS) and Westernport Community Support (WPCS). There have been many community groups advocating for increased funding and increased housing options on the Mornington Peninsula, and a Round Table was recently held with Harriet Shing (State Housing Minister). This provided an opportunity for community groups to speak of the increased demands for services. We also heard of a homeless man dying in a tent on the foreshore, which is horrific and especially so considering this is happening on our doorstep within a wealthy demographic.
Women’s Community Shelters (WCS) is an organisation seeking to establish a shelter in Rye for women and children fleeing domestic violence. The shelter will be named Moonah House. WCS uses a well established model which has been successful in NSW. The Lions Club of Flinders District has agreed to support their endeavours here on the Mornington Peninsula.
The Forum will hear from our guest speaker Peter Hunt who is the founding member of WCS in NSW and now a resident of Flinders. Detective Senior Sergeant Tracey Meyer from Somerville Family Violence Investigation Unit, will also be speaking, along with Despi O’Connor, co-chair of Moonah House – Mornington Peninsula Womens Shelter Ltd.
Donations may be made to : Donate to Moonah House Project
