We were blessed with a beautiful Autumn day. Flinders Hall was as usual full to capacity to hear guest speakers the Hon Edward O’Donohue MLC, and Lieutenant Ben Low RAN, while the overflow crowd members listened to the service outside in the sun. Everyone then gathered behind drummer boy Barney Fogarty and the McClelland College school band on our walk to the monument reserve.
Still more residents and visitors waited there for the service conducted by Lieutenant Claire Baldwin RAN, with a Catafalque Party courtesy of HMAS Cerberus.
The wreath laying ceremony began with an address by John Baker, the Shire CEO. A poignant moment followed when a small group of children from the Flinders Pre School came forward with their own hand-made tribute. It was particularly pleasing to see wreaths laid on the World War II memorial, something which would have pleased Christie Johnstone, Secretary of the RSL Flinders sub-branch 1948-2019, who passed away recently, aged 99.
