The Flinders Community Association dates back to the 1970s. The FCA is the voice of local residents and Flinders weekenders. During its +40-year history, the FCA has waged hundreds of small battles to protect our zoning as a village and preserve the Flinders that you see and enjoy today.
Planning – One of the proudest achievements is the creation and development of the Flinders Village Design Guidelines to protect the unique village character from excessive development.
United Petrol Station – This was a proposal to build a 24-hour convenience store and major petrol outlet. The proposed scale was way out of place for tranquil Flinders. The Flinders community fought back and won.
Sculpture – Even today, people have different views about the sculpture at the roundabout. The FCA worked hard to get the support of VicRoads and the Council to proceed. Today it serves as an iconic feature of our streetscape as you drive towards the sea.
Pedestrian Crossings – That’s the work of the FCA again. And we succeeded in lowering the Village speed limit too.
New Village Community Centre – The FCA has been lobbying for a new village hall for about a decade. The hall is the epicentre of our community and is in continuous use. The Shire Council and State Government have now given their support to our proposal, and construction has now started.
Overhaul of the Park & Construction of Children’s Playground – We lobbied on behalf of the community for the main park and playground to be revitalised which is now done. In July 2018, we began lobbying for a toilet block for families using the park. The Shire has recently finalised plans and we expect new toilets to be installed in 2023.
Convention Centre – The FCA has recently pushed back on plans for a major convention centre on the site of the current motel. The FCA represented the community at VCAT. We didn’t get what we wanted, but managed to extract several design concessions if it proceeds.
Save Flinders Pier – When news broke in early 2021 that Parks Victoria planned to demolish the inner section of the historic Flinders Pier, the FCA called a public meeting to discuss what we should do. More than 300 people filled the hall. Today, a major campaign is underway to reverse the decision and Heritage Victoria has recommended its preservation.
Flinders Zero Carbon Communities – Many in the community of Flinders are seeking a target of being carbon neutral by 2030. A working group established under the FCA has commenced an education and consultation program within the Village to see how this can be achieved.
Walking Trails – In 2022, we lodged a submission to Council for a Village footpath and trail Strategy to improve accessibility for young families with prams and residents with limited mobility. An All-Abilities trail is a priority for the FCA. We have also suggested a walking trail to join Flinders with nearby Shoreham for our active community members. We will continue to push for both.
