For all those who are eagerly looking forward to finally being able to burn off their accumulated garden and paddock rubbish, I have some good news – as of Wednesday morning (ie May 1st) many of you will be able to “strike a light”. However there are a number of restrictions, which are outlined in some detail – Click here 12 Dec 2023 Fact File – Open Air Burning ex MPSC – the key points are that you cannot burn-off if your property is less than 1,500 square metres in size, and for larger properties the wind must be less than 20km / hour. All burns should be notified in advance to 1800 668 511 and to your neighbours – this stops big red trucks turning up because your neighbour can see smoke.
Please do read the attached if planning a burn – there are quite a lot of restrictions and requirements imposed by our Council. Also please take care if burning off in the near future – it is still quite dry, and last year, for the month after restrictions were lifted, the CFA had to respond to over 20 calls a week for problems with burn-offs.
Finally, as we all start to light the Aga, the Koonara or the open fireplace, or start heavily using the heating system, this would be a good time to check all the heating ducts and the chimneys.
This year we had a beautifully quiet fire season in our little bit of paradise, so thank you to you all for that excellent result. As always, please feel free to text me on 0416 178 547 if you need any advice or help.
All the best,
David Marshall – 2nd Lt. and Community Safety Officer, Flinders Brigade
