Your FCA Committee has been looking at the idea of deploying an outdoor gym for all abilities and ages in the Flinders Recreational Reserve (main park) in Cook Street.
We believe an outdoor gym would contribute to the physical and mental well-being of a wide range of users of various capabilities and age groups throughout the year.
The FCA would lead the deployment and fund raising of such a gym joining with businesses, individuals and Flinders Community Groups in association with the MPSC.
Funding may come from Shire Council grants and other fundraising initiatives. Initial costings are approximately $80,000 for 18 pieces of static and dynamic equipment. The area will be approximately 14m x 10m which is a very small footprint in the Park. Whilst the gym is meant for teenage and adult use the equipment is child safe made to relevant Australian Standards
It is proposed to contract a company that is expert in outdoor fitness equipment with impressive deployments in places like Elwood, Como Park and Pt Lonsdale amongst hundreds of others around Australia. The gym would be aesthetically pleasing and would add to the amenity of the park
Exercising outdoors provides a range of physical, mental and emotional health benefits including increased immunity to diseases and decreased levels of stress and depression. A few minutes of sunshine a day plus activities on an outside gym are great for bone and muscle health as well, important longevity considerations for us all
Such a resource would add to important social development in the Village, a big factor in mental health. In deploying a free of charge outdoor gym, Flinders would be joining the growing number of over 300 local communities who benefit from outdoor gyms across Australia.
