On Thursday 15 March, the Mornington Peninsula Mayor, Councillor Bryan Payne, Chris West, representing the Bunurong Land Council and the children of the Flinders Preschool unveiled the new flagpole plaques on the lawn at the Flinders Community Hall. The event included a Welcome to Country. The MC for the event was Erin Pennett, the MP Shire Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Support Officer, and the event was also attended by Cr Hugh Fraser.
The Mornington Peninsula Shire installed two additional flagpoles in front of the Flinders community hall in 2017. The flags poles were installed to mark Reconciliation Week and as an expression of the council’s commitment to working together with the Bunurong/BoonWurrung Traditional Owner community and the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community who live on the Mornington Peninsula. The plaques acknowledge the history and cultural significance of the flags.
As a thank you for their assistance in raising the flags, the Flinders Preschool children were each presented with clapsticks.
