Our public meeting on Sunday morning offered the Save Flinders Pier team an opportunity to bring everyone up to date with campaign efforts and opened the floor to questions from supporters. Thank you to the Flinders Yacht Club for providing a venue and all the wonderful people who made the effort to come along to show their support; it was terrific to see so many faces. Amongst those in attendance were Flinders locals, supporters from neighbouring suburbs and Melbourne, commercial stakeholders, members of the diving and snorkelling community, local artists and the family of pier campaign member Trent Williams who recently passed away. Thank you to Harry from Flinders Mussels who discussed the importance of pier accessibility and functionality from a commercial and pedestrian, future development and safety perspective. On display around the room was some of the fabulous artwork completed by school children as part of the Mornington Peninsula Schools Art Competition, curated and organised by Trish Hurley. The effort which has clearly gone into these pieces are a credit to the children, teachers and schools who have supported the project. It’s obvious our community, both immediate and extended, do not want the historic timber pier to be demolished.
