With a white Elephant stall groaning with treasures, scones and jam ready, over 600 pots of jams and marmalades, a Pet Show, pony rides, vintage cars and a spinning wheel with fantastic prizes all ready to go, what more could we have asked for except perfect weather?
The St John’s Fete was held on a ripper of a day supported by over 100 volunteers who, for months beforehand, baked, jammed, pickled, sorted and cleaned, sewed and knitted all to ensure the fun of an old-fashioned village fete. St John’s in Flinders has held a fete since 1939 raising funds for the dear little local church and for local charities who they have supported for many years.
Barbara Richards, the Fete convener, said “The St John’s Fete only comes together with the support of so many locals who not only volunteer for months prior, but who all turn up at 7m to put up marquees and bunting and ensure everything is displayed beautifully. We had plants, cakes and cookies, fresh produce, hand knitted toys and handicrafts and one of the biggest arrays of jams and jellies ever seen! St Johns is so grateful to so many who helped raise over $30,000 on the day”.
Not only did the adults enjoy the book stall, sausage sizzle and bacon and egg rolls but they were able to let the kids have fun on the lucky bottle stall, the mini golf and pony rides and join in all the children’s activities managed Parish Deacon Christine Barren. The church was open for visitors who were able to see the beautiful windows by well-known local artist David Wright.
The 2024 fete was generously sponsored by Community Bank Balnarring and District and Mr Piggy joined the crown and drew the raffle. The fete was also supported by Kay & Burton and the Flinders Community Association whose team were also on hand as part of the volunteer group.
