A meeting was held at Balnarring on Monday 25 June to hear about plans for AGL to build a gas import jetty and pipeline at Crib Point. Early agreements have been signed by AGL contingent on the project proceeding, however final Government approval is yet to be granted.
The planned project will source gas from Australian and international suppliers to use in south-eastern Australia. Crib Point has been identified by AGL as the preferred option for the import jetty and a feasibility study is now underway; however there is deep community concern about its potential impact on the environment and local ecology.
The Save Westernport group is fighting to stop the project and is conducting an active campaign of protests through the media and online. The group is deeply worried about the impact on the local environment and wetlands; the potential introduction of marine pests; and the intrusion of the proposed pipeline on to farms and nature reserves. The proposed location of the floating storage facility is Woolley’s Beach (pictured).
AGL has placed information on its website at www.agl.com.au/cribpoint; while the Save Western Port group has created a website at https://www.savewesternport.org/about to campaign against the project.
